Connect and Create

The "Connect and Create" social networking event was a resounding success during Black History Month, hosted by Diversity Richmond and UGRC. This networking event aimed to celebrate and empower the Black Queer community through a multifaceted approach.

A dynamic panel of professionals from various industries offered attendees insights, guidance, and inspiration, and shared their journeys, expertise, and tips for success, fostering meaningful connections and future networking opportunities.

To enhance the cultural experience, the event showcased a delectable spread of soul food and African cuisine, reflecting the rich culinary heritage of the Black community. This not only delighted taste buds but also served as a reminder of the importance of cultural appreciation and representation.

Moreover, a thought-provoking film screening added depth and perspective to the event, shedding light on Black Love. This cinematic experience “Black Rainbow Love” sparked discussions, educated attendees, and fostered a sense of unity and pride.

We were also fortunate to have an artist talk by Justice Dwight, one of the featured queer artists in the Iridian Gallery exhibit that ran in February. He shared his story, offering reflections on his art style and the inspiration behind the pop art he is most known for. The community took a mini-field trip over to the gallery with Justice to enjoy his art and ask him deeper questions.

To top it off, a live band performance infused the event with energy, rhythm, and a sense of celebration. Attendees grooved to the music, unwinding, and connecting in a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere.

As a highlight, the announcement of the upcoming year-long experience, "Black and Bold 2.0," for emerging and established Black LGBTQ+ leaders in Greater Richmond was met with anticipation and excitement. This series of events promises to provide a platform for diverse leaders to shine, network, and collaborate; continuing the legacy of empowerment and growth within the Black LGBTQ+ community.

"Connect and Create" truly exemplified the spirit of unity, celebration, and empowerment, making it a memorable and impactful networking event hosted by Diversity with our community partner UGRC. The event paved the way for even more opportunities to advance our mission of connecting people, partners, and programs as the hub of the LGBTQ+ community of Greater Richmond.
