This deeply personal documentary reveals rebirth and courage within America’s deeply conservative Bible Belt as Cole, a transgender man, struggles to find a church that will affirm his identity and support his relationship with his girlfriend, Ashley. With a small group of supportive friends, relatives, and Ashley, Cole’s search for love and belonging leads him to a radical revision of what faith and church can be.

Hosted by the VHS in partnership with the Richmond Peace Education Center and supported in part by Diversity Richmond’s VHS Guy Kinman Research Award.

Have you ever thought about becoming a foster parent? A local foster care agency, Embrace Treatment Foster Care, reports that they are unable to place up to 10 kids per day due to a lack of foster homes. There are over 5,000 children in the Virginia Foster Care System who are in need of a loving, stable foster home, and EmbraceTFC is one of many foster care agencies desperately looking for people to fill that role! Embrace welcomes all types of families and are working hard to dispel the stereotype of what a traditional foster family looks like. Here are a couple of myths/facts you may not be aware of:

Myth: Only 2 parent traditional male/female homes are allowed to be foster parents. False!!! Embrace is reaching out to single parent and two parent homes of all races, religions, cultures, sexual preferences, gender, etc. They work with many nontraditional homes, including LGBTQ individuals and couples. “There is no one ‘best type’ of home, all children are different creating a need for a variety of different types foster homes. The most important requirement is for you to be a loving, supportive family where foster children can thrive.

Foster Care Fact: Did you know that the percentage of youth in the foster care system who are LGBTQ identified is larger than the percentage of LGBTQ youth in the general youth population? In many cases, LGBTQ youth may have an added layer of trauma that comes with being rejected or mistreated because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. One particular couple who has chosen to foster with Embrace stated “the LGBTQ community knows what it’s like to be rejected from their family. They are all too familiar with the deep wound that you have from desperately being wanted and rejected. This community can provide an incredible gift.

Embrace will be hosting an informational session on Tuesday, June 20th at 6:00 pm at Diversity Richmond’s small Event Hall. If you are unable to attend the info session but have questions about foster parenting, contact Erin Salum, Recruitment Coordinator by Email or phone, (704) 500-6256, or visit embracetfc.com
