OUR HISTORY

Diversity Richmond continues to evolve into a multi-faceted organization while remaining a respected voice for the acceptance of sexual and gender minorities.

2021

April 1, Virginia Pride began a new journey as a program of Diversity Richmond. Virginia Pride events and activities continues to be guided by a diverse committee of volunteers supported by a full-time program director.

2015

In April, the Gay Community Center of Richmond changed its name to Diversity Richmond to reflect a more inclusive and expansive community.

2008

Virginia Pride applied for and received 501(c)(3) charitable status with the IRS, making contributions to Virginia Pride tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

2004

GCCR purchased our current facility, which has undergone extensive renovations through the years, with much yet to accomplish. The photo pictured is courtesy of GayRVA and was featured in a story in the Advocate.

2000

Jon Klein opened a Main St. store called Out of the Closet Thrift, which was the fundraising arm of the Richmond Gay Community Foundation. The name was later changed to Diversity Thrift — now one of Richmond’s best-known and most popular thrift stores.

1999

The Gay Community Center of Richmond was founded to support the agencies and groups that serve Central Virginia’s sexual and gender minority people, and to educate the public about the many issues facing our community.

1975

Virginia Pride was founded by a group of loyal and active community members to bring community awareness and to promote diversity while enabling unity among the Richmond LGBT community members.

Operations.

Diversity Richmond is governed by a board of directors that operates under bylaws. As a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization, Diversity Richmond files form 990 with the Internal Revenue Service. The Diversity Richmond Bylaws and IRS Forms 990 are available as PDF files:

Nonprofit, Nonstock—All Inclusive

Diversity Richmond is a nonprofit, nonstock corporation doing business as Diversity Richmond, Diversity Thrift, and Diversity Bingo, and organized to improve the lives of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer+ people through scientific, educational and charitable activities.
