J. Alan Cumbey - Beyond the valley of wigs in space

Opening reception

Fri., Nov. 17
7 - 9 PM

The premier retrospective exhibit of outsider art by J. Alan Cumbey will be held at the Iridian Gallery November 11, 2017 – January 27, 2018.

Cumbey worked as a writer in Richmond, VA, and was privately a prolific, self-taught visual artist. His visually arresting drawings twist together confessional, provocative and socially conscious elements with joyful, rhythmic fantasy worlds filled with technicolor objects, patterns, creatures and people at play, influenced by the pop and counterculture he loved since his childhood in rural Virginia. Very early works dwell on gay themes. Later works turn inward as he processed the outbreak of a mysterious “gay plague” and ultimately, his own declining health.

This retrospective will be the first public viewing of his art, and includes drawings from 1982 until his death in 1992 from diabetes and AIDS. A limited number of drawings have been donated by his estate for sale in this show as a benefit for the Iridian Gallery and Diversity Richmond. There are no commissions on the sales for this show.

Opening reception and party will be held November 17, 7-9 PM. Free and opening to the public.
